Comparing the ride of a 5 series to an X1 is apples to oranges. I would expect a vehicle which costs $15K-$20K more to be smoother. The X1 is higher but still is based on the E90 which is probably the best platform BMW ever made up until now. If you drove an X3 along side a 5 series the comments would probably be the same and its frame is the same as X1 just stretched. A fairer comparison would be 328X for weight and ride but still the X1 is higher so it just isn't going to handle as well.
