I'm looking to get the Alpina TCU flash, as well as some other coding done and have absolutely zero idea where to start.

Will type out some details tomorrow! Basically, the TCU trans flash and other coding can be done by you, or someone else, with a laptop and downloaded BMW software.
As far as engine tunes on the n55, you can add a piggyback like a JB4 easily...takes about 30 mins to install once familiar. This leaves the factory tune in place, and essentially tricks the ecu (dme) into running more boost. But to reflash the stock ecu, it first needs to be physically removed from the car and mailed to a tuner to be " unlocked", or bench flashed. Once unlocked, one can flash the ECU via the OBDII port ( using their phone and an MHD app., for example)
