Can you try to copy some those unicode files onto a USB-falsh-drive. If you attach the flash-drive to your car are the names displayed correctly?
The problem could be in both, the iPod-cord and/or the sat-nav-unit. You won't have any luck "patching" the cord, there _might_ be a future software upgrade vor your sat-nav.
