I found that it only works reliable when you make sure that the iPhone is unlocked.
If you connect it while it is locked or if it auto locks while not fully connected you will have issues.
I am using a iPhone 11 Pro on a fully loaded 2015 X1 and connect the phone though the USB jack in the center console.
