They say that BMW NA will not allow it because (a) it's not just the steering wheel, but the column and wiring, and (b) the VIN encodes whether it came with paddles or not.

I would not want to be without the paddles. The up-down on the stick won't give you an option to temporarily shift down while still in automatic mode, which is very useful, especially for engine braking.
And shifting more than one gear is much faster with paddles too.

I miss not having a heated steering wheel, but driving gloves help.
Interesting... If we had ordered the X1 I was going to get the paddles, but one that was less than a year old with low miles and every option (except the paddles ) popped up for several thousand less (and no 2 month wait).

I'm going to try some German friends, see if they can help. If I dig up any useful info I'll be sure to post it here.
