The M-Sport wheel with or without paddles has the thumb rest, but what it does not have an option for is heating.

And BMW will not retrofit a wheel with paddles onto a car delivered without paddles. I know, because they first screwed up and delivered mine without paddles, and I had to wait for several months to get a new car with paddles, and otherwise identical.
They say that BMW NA will not allow it because (a) it's not just the steering wheel, but the column and wiring, and (b) the VIN encodes whether it came with paddles or not.

I would not want to be without the paddles. The up-down on the stick won't give you an option to temporarily shift down while still in automatic mode, which is very useful, especially for engine braking.
And shifting more than one gear is much faster with paddles too.

I miss not having a heated steering wheel, but driving gloves help.
