Not to carry this on further, but looking at North America build numbers and making an educated guess at a failure rate (my background is as a Failure Analysis Engineer) I'm estimating there have been well under 100 of these failures in total.
It's easy to see where with this quantity a given dealer could easily have never seen a car with this problem.
