I had a 97 Z3 and it also had build quality issues, but I attribute that to it being a new model and a new platform. I also think the first generation Z3 was just a lousy car as BMW was trying to make a car that should have cost $40-50k but instead they wanted to be able to charge $30k. So they used cheap materials. The result was a car loaded with rattles that felt cheap. I sold mine less than 2 years later. Every other BMW I've had since, including a Mini Cooper, were all very solid vehicles and none of them ever needed a single repair.
