I was also wondering about wearing out the motor but I don't believe that to be an issue. And I would think the car is smart enough to stop the motor if it encounters resistance. Plus if I'm not mistaken the mirrors will fold mechanically when forced, so again I would think the ice buildup wouldn't cause too many issues. I haven't checked though so don't take my word for it.
