BMWs with automatics generally do not coast when you take your foot off the gas. They engine brake lightly to reduce speed, which is presumably why you lifted the foot off. It shifts down a bit earlier than many other cars, both to increase the engine braking, and to be ready if you floor it again.

To coast, you need to put it in neutral. But unless you're hypermiling or drive through a neighborhood where engine braking is illegal, I generally don't recommend coasting.
