Well, except for the 1M which is a 'proper' M car and just has an M and no number.
In the end only the "real gear heads" will know which models are what. Either they will tell you it's an added M badge on an M sport model or they will ask you "oh, I didn't know they made an X1M!"
. Won't make a bit of difference to the rest of the population.
