It's funny, I notice this a lot in the girlfriends Rav4, it stays in 2nd unless you come to a complete stop and sit there for a second. I don't notice it in the x1 though.

When I mentioned throttle mapping I mean fix the issue by using a tune that can manipulate it or if you are against the idea of tuning the vehicle then you could look into the sprint booster.
If you pay attention you will notice the difference when you leave from 1st or 2nd gear. In my coupe I only use the paddle shifters and when I am going to take off from a stop I will leave it in 2nd, to keep traction. For normal driving I downshift into 1st.
