First road test was inconclusive. I couldn't tell any big sound difference. (It's 24F outside so I wasn't eager to roll down the windows to hear the exhaust)
It seemed the trans shifted faster in Drive mode....felt almost like DS.

UPDATE: from the e46 forums, probably the real reason for the baffle:

"""Nope....keeping one of the exhaust pipes closed increases backpressure, which in turn gives (slightly) greater torque delivery at lower RPMs. (Remember, a 325 needs all the help it can get....it has a dinky little 150 cubic-inch motor pulling 3300 pounds of steel, which ain`t no joke). Wide-open throttle equals low manifold vacuum, which allows that little half-assed flap to open, giving better high-RPM breathing ability."""
