The tip-in delay is bothersome too. I'm really easy on the pedal but sometimes the delay causes the car to not go, but then overshoot. This is especially annoying in slow and go traffic.
In most of my other cars in neutral, the engine seems immediately disconnected. In the X1, you can feel the engine shake in the driver door. It's not noticeable on the steering wheel since I have electric power steering. There's definitely some serious secondary dynamic imbalance in that engine.
BMW really needs to take a lesson from Mazda and do cylinder position detection because its really rough along with a stronger starter motor.
