Sounds like the retrofit is the way to go, since I rely on maps and my car (safety features) for my work, yes? It sounds like there are a ton of features that I haven't tapped

You have to sign up on the connected drive website then press the SOS button to complete the registration (for new cars, the dealer does website part (linking cars to your email) but owner has to press sos button to start things up
If it's a used purchased you probably have to do both steps. I'm not sure the service contract transfers but you can ask them.
I think the retrofit is the way to go. My wife's car is in for the new combox and programming right now
EDIT: it is taking about 1.5 days to do this. ~0.5 day for combox replacement 0.5 day for programming, and the rest of the time waiting/downtime
