dgkli, I really enjoyed your summation; not so oddly, some of the same cars you noted were on my list as well. Frankly, the location of the dealer played no small part in our decision; had the VW and MiniCooper agencies been a couple miles away as well, things might have gone differently. Not only that, but it's my understanding that BMW and Mini are to share a front drive platform just down the road, and I may have to take a look at that.
All that being duly noted, we're happy with our car (and that is a 'we'; my bride had to like it too), and I was reflecting on how long it had been since I had a car with an actual trunk (the answer; J Edgar Opel, purchased in 1971, and an unmitigated disaster in many respects), but hatches make all kinds of sense.
Just a wee bit more money than I had really expected to spend, but there's no sense waiting on good things 'till I get a little younger...
