How about going for an ecodriving course ?

Seriously, it's very difficult to provide any advice without seeing your driving style.
17L does sound indeed very excessive even for a 18i petrol, but if you floor the pedal at every traffic light or more often than necessary, it's very possible.

Keep the revving below 3000 rpm between gears, or better, follow the gear indicator.
These modern fuel injected engines do not need constant pressure on the gas pedal. Release when you are on flat terrain or downhill.

I used to drive an MPI fuel injected 4.6L V8 Ford Crown Victoria. Depending on my driving style, I could manage on the same city drive 12L/100 or... 21L/100 !
