In some countries, you can get a fine if you spray pedestrians, and are liable for rocks hitting other cars. Sure, mudflaps help, but they only cover a small area (and aren't even available for all X1 models).
Personally, I dislike how my wheels and tires extend too far out. Pull a string over the fender and move it down. If it snags on the wheel, the fender is too small or the wheel too broad or spaced out.
