Local US economies don't really dictate used car prices. Supply and demand typically do.
BMW whores out its cars in the US with cheap leases. This floods the market with used cars which hurts resale. Which is typically awful for midline and premium cars anyway. Couple the above with expensive maintenance costs and you don't have a good recipe for strong resale.
