Look ahead as far as you can on the road and adjust your driving to preserve momentum above all else. Avoid having to regain speed, and don't attempt to maintain an exact speed. Brake early but lightly for red lights, turning cars or other situations you normally would stop for, and you may not have to stop at all. 40->20->40 uses a lot less gas than 40->0->40.
Last tank in my 35i: 25.5 mpg, almost all non-highway traffic with a fair amount of hills and traffic lights. With a N20, I'd almost certainly be above 30.
