Subframes absolutely can break, especially when weakened by rust. Exposure to salt and water will accelerate the rusting process.
Smartest move is probably to take it to someone qualified to inspect your car and have them look at it. A picture can't really tell whether it is rusty yet structurally sound or ready to break apart.
