With the 35i, there's a six speed gearbox, not eight, so semi-manual mode is far less work.
In addition to D, DS and M, there's also "D with paddles", where you keep it in D mode but shift up or down temporarily using the paddles. If I want to drive more sporty, I use manual mode exclusively, but most of the time "D with paddles" works just fine.
