It's the 328d in the US (same as ROW 320d though). It's got a timing belt, so you'd still have the joy of frequent, expensive belt changes, just like your VW. The X1 comes with either the 2.0L N20 or the 3.0L N55, both of which have timing chains and avoid that headache.

The X1 is based on the previous 3er wagon, the E91 and is significantly smaller than the new 3er wagon, the F31. If you want more modern technology and a larger size, the F31 is likely your choice. If you want hydraulic steering and a little smaller car, the X1 is likely the better choice. You can drive any F30 3er sedan to get a feel for what the F31 will drive like.
