The gasket itself is cheap ($10 aftermarket, $30 BMW). The high price comes from labor, as much of the engine needs to come apart to replace this (not to mention it's messy).

Before I bought my car (used with 60k miles), I had BMW perform a pre-purchase inspection. A leaking oil filter housing gasket was all they found and they quoted the repair at ~ $950 . I had the seller (Mercedes dealer) replace it before sale.
