My X1 experience...

Ordered my X1 2.8 xdrive Mineral White with Ultimate, MSport, Lighting Pkg, Heated Seats, Sat Radio, HK, in early October of 2012 and took delivery in late Nov 2012. Added roof rails, rubber mats, Execuhitch, Tint, and Burger Stage 1.

Drove for 80K and recently traded it on a 2017 VW Tiguan SEL. Disappointingly, the trade in value ranged anywhere from $10,500-14,000 depending on what site. Ended up getting 2 offers...one $12,300 and the other $13,000. I took the latter from the VW dealer.

I enjoyed my X1 but kept it longer than I should have, I think. During my time with it the list of issues was moderate. First issue was with the outdated NAV database at delivery. Selling dealer would update the NAV (at a considerable cost to me) to a release that was available 3 months before I took delivery! Went to another dealer(Checkered Flag) and they updated for free without question. Needless to say I never returned to the selling dealer(Casey BMW) for any type of work. FWIW, I shopped my X1 as spec'd and Casey was $1800 lower in terms of agreeable selling price.

Next issue was a warranty problem related to squeaking dash around the radio trim. Dealer removed the trim and lubed the points where dis-similar plastics were touching. This actually worked quite well and I never had another problem with it.

The Intake Camshaft Spring recall was performed, then the lower steering shaft was replaced and after a ridiculously long wait, the air bags...all under waranty.

Two sets of rear brakes and one set of fronts were installed. I did the last set of rears myself.

By this time the warranty was up and I was beginning to feel the play in the steering shaft again. I let it go and never did correct it. The sunroof shade would occasionally get cranky but re-initializing would always get it back on track. The passenger side-view mirror became an issue...working when it wanted to...usually not working on rainy days...eventually not working at all. Then the Comfort Access stopped working on the passenger side and eventually stopped at all points. The battery was showing signs of weakening so I replaced it at 75K.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my X1. It rode well enough for a small car, it was quick(thanks to the Burger Tune)and it never failed to start and get me where I was going...well there was that one time I shredded a tire. I used it as my DD for 4 years and then gave it to my wife. She liked it but didn't love it, always reminding me how small it was. I will admit that it was small but when we went on trips I used a Cargo box on top and if needed, pulled a small utility trailer. It was barely enough on several of those trips. She recently got herself an F-150 Super Crew 4x4 3.5 Ecoboost so she's happy now...and it will tow the new boat. The X1 would not have towed a 22' Outrage.

So I'm back out of a BMW once again and I'm not sure I'll be back any time soon, if at all. I like the Tiguan and I got it with a 6yr 72K VW warranty...so it will be at least that long. I hope everyone's X1 performs at least as good as this one...it was a work horse. Be well!
