I'm not too sure. I had that on my Mercury Mountaineer, and after a year, I took it in for a recall for the rear window struts, and what I found out (too late) was that the recall was welding them shut so it wouldn't open - presumably people had hurt themselves and sued the manufacturer. I was livid, but they refused to revert it.

Anyhow, there would be stupid people driving an X1 too, hurting themselves and suing the manufacturer. So I'm not surprised it's not an option on any newer BMWs (as far as I can tell). I'm surprised that they still allow the hood to slam, and not stop three inches before closing like many other cars, and having to be pushed down the last bit. But then again, perhaps the stupid people don't open the hood anyhow, so it's less of a problem?
