The X3 is an F series chassis, totally unrelated to the E84 chassis of the X1 which is a derivative of the "outdated" E91 3er wagon, which used the same 6s transmission in the 335i offered everywhere but NA.
Well even though they call it F25, it is very heavily based on the E90. The first X3 was based on the E46. F-series has been used to refer to changes in design philosophy and technological innovations. Regardless of the series name, it's all just a parts bin, so if it ain't broke, just make it look prettier.
