The general consensus is that it's his car and he's free to do what he wants but that an aftermarket tune and factory package do not an M car make. Also, that he should not be surprised if people give him crap over it. I don't see how that is hating on the OP.

The badge, as with AMG/SVT/SRT/etc..., means more to the subset of auto enthusiasts who respect the heritage and meaning behind it. To them/us, it means more than just a tuned car (factory or aftermarket) that came from the factory with a few M-tech bits that had badges. A car that came from BMW with a few bits originating from the Motorsport division is much different than a car that was actually worked over by the Motorsport division. Some people gravitate towards these badges because they mean something (or they want to look cool) but that meaning may only be superficial and lack the meaning behind it.

I came into this thread griping about the Sport Line lacking anything tangible to put the 'Sport' in 'Sport Line' aside from the bolstered front seats .
