I would say that the only place in the Southeastern US that one might need AWD would be in mountain areas. Otherwise, it's a waste of money here in the sunny south. I probably wouldn't buy an AWD X1 if that's all BMW offered, due to the added weight and decreased gas mileage.
I have a friend who lives near Blue Ridge, Georgia, which is a stone's throw from the Tennessee/Georgia border. He has a 1st generation X3 and his wife bought a new 2011 328ix last year. The dealer in Chattanooga had to swap out with a dealer up north to even find one. Since they live on a remote mountaintop that sees snow more than once a year, they actually use AWD. Here in the Atlanta area, we might see a little snow once every two years.
