I use a flexible load space protector.

It is a Landrover accessory. I find it very useful as it works for the boot only as well as when the rear seats are down. It can be used to keep mud and water off the seats and carpet when my mtb is in the back and it is large enough to cover the bike and any other gear I have in the back of the car. This cover and the window blinds keeps the stuff in the back of my car very private.

It also has a fold out flap to protect the lip of the rear door, etc.

It is pretty much like a large tarp that can be folded any way you choose.
