Wow - my 20d xDrive is completely different- seems counter intuitive - bigger equals less.
For me, the normal auto mode endeavors to maintain 1500rpm no matter what - 35mph? 5th gear will be fine. It does refuse to go into 6th mind you!
Consumption wise, I had 500miles out of a tank whilst in the UK recently, with 80 miles of that at home in Guernsey, where top speed is 35 - not much grid lock though - average about 33mpg per tank, UK was 55+ - at 75mph :-)
